President’s Day is a U.S. federal holiday that is celebrated in honor of George Washington’s birthday. On this day, some of us take the opportunity to explore our nation’s history by visiting national monuments and landmarks around the country. Since President’s Day falls on a Monday, some may be traveling the weekend before, or even taking advantage of having the holiday off of work.

1. Mount Rushmore National Memorial
Keystone, South Dakota is home to a nationally recognized granite sculpture of four of our past presidents’ faces: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Don’t think that all you’ll be doing in Keystone is marveling at giant heads of Mount Rushmore, there are also tours and activities including a Ranger Walk, Sculptor’s Studio Talk and a tour of Heritage Village available for visitors.
2. Washington D.C.
Although this may be the most obvious place to visit, it’s also the best for President’s Day. In our nation’s capital, visitors can explore the White House, the Capitol building and the world-class museums that may be free to enter. Other great Washington D.C. attractions include the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.
3. Mount Vernon Estate
Located about 16 miles from Washington D.C. in Northern Virginia, Mount Vernon Estate was the home to George Washington and his wife, Martha Washington for over 40 years. In honor of President’s Day and George Washington’s 281st birthday, visitors will be granted free admission to tour to estate on February 18th, 2014.
4. Gettysburg National Military Park
Pennsylvania is home to The Gettysburg National Military Park, the location of the Battle of Gettysburg – The Civil War’s deadliest battle. Gettysburg is the location where President Lincoln delivered one of America’s most famous speeches, the Gettysburg Address.
5. Washington Crossing Historic Park
Washington Crossing Historic Park is located in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and is the historic landmark where George Washington led his men across the Delaware River to Trenton, New Jersey. The group surprise attached the Hessians during the Revolutionary War. This location is now a park for visitors to explore.
