Tahlequah is a city located in eastern Oklahoma, about 30 miles northeast of Muskogee. Originally inhabited by Native Americans, the name is derived from a Cherokee word meaning “two is enough” or “just two.”
Legend has it that three tribal elders planned to meet up and discuss the location of the Cherokee Nation capital. But only two came and decided that “two is enough.”

Things to Do
History
Because it’s the capital of the Cherokee Nation, it makes a perfect destination for anyone interested in learning about the Cherokee history and culture. Book a cultural tour, and walk the same paths Native Americans did centuries ago.
Some places of historical interest include The Cherokee Supreme Court Building, built in 1844. It’s the oldest public building in Oklahoma. It also doubled as the printing press for the Cherokee Advocate, Oklahoma’s first newspaper.
Hunter’s Home, formerly known as the George M. Murrell Home,and the Thompson House are also among some of the most important historical buildings and are each named on the National Register of Historic Places. Hunter’s Home is the only pre-civil war home in the area. And both houses having interesting period pieces.
The Cherokee Heritage Center is a must-see. It’s a historical and cultural museum, with a permanent Trail of Tears exhibit, in addition to rotating exhibitions.
The Cherokee National Prison Museum was the only one in Indian Territory from 1875 until the turn of the 20th century.
Outdoor Attractions
When you’ve had enough learning, get outside. There’s no shortage of outdoor adventure here.
Grab your fishing pole and float down the Illinois River for a catch. Rumor has it there are over 70 different species of fish- enough to keep you busy for a while. During warmer months, put on a swimsuit and get out on to Tenkiller Lake, for a little swimming, boating or water skiing.
Back on land, practice your golf swing on of two golfing courses in the area: the Tahlequah City Golf Course or the Cherry Springs Golf Club.
