Looking for a fun way to spend a day in Yonkers with your kids? Here are a few of the exciting possibilities that Yonkers has to offer for families with children:
Sprain Ridge Park
If your family would love an outdoor experience even within the urban environment of New York City, Sprain Ridge Park provides a fun, adventurous day out. The park covers 278 acres and offers swimming, hiking, and mountain biking. There are two picnic areas as well, so kids can sprawl out on the grass for some lunch when they’re ready to take a break from exploring the park. In order to gain admission to this park, you must present a county parks pass.
LEGOLAND® Discovery Center Westchester
For children ages 3 – 10, LEGOLAND® Discovery Center Westchester is a place filled with wonder and excitement. At the Yonkers location, your kids can see famous New York City landmarks constructed out of LEGO® bricks, build LEGO® racing cars, explore the LEGO® Fire Academy and Construction site soft play areas, and watch an interactive film in the LEGO® 4-D Cinema. LEGOLAND Discovery Center Westchester offers rides, a play zone, and a shop so you can take home all the fun!
The Science Barge
The Science Barge, located on the waterfront in Yonkers, offers fun, interactive, and educational exhibits on renewable resources and urban farming. Both kids and adults can learn about hydroponics, aquaponics, and solar and wind power by actually experiencing these scientific processes in action. The Yonkers waterfront area offers several fun and tasty restaurants where you and your family can relax and refresh after your Science Barge experience.
The Edward J. Murray Memorial Skating Center
Skating is the perfect activity for the whole family. Whether you and your family are ice skating pros or you’ve never done it before, skating is a fun way to get some exercise and spend time together. Show off your moves on the ice, teach your kids how to do a figure-eight, or just laugh at yourselves as you try to stay upright. The Edward J. Murray Memorial Skating Center offers public skating times every weekend, and limited hours during the week. You can bring your own skates if you have them or simply rent them when you get there.
The Hudson River Museum
The Hudson River Museum offers an excellent variety of family-friendly exhibits and activities. The museum includes a planetarium, a restored 1877 mansion, art galleries, and family art and science workshops. It’s perfect for all school-aged children, but even the smallest members of your family can participate in an art project or be captivated by stargazing in the planetarium. The museum also boasts a permanent exhibit called the Hudson Riverama – an amazing interactive experience that teaches museum-goers all about the history and eco-systems of the Hudson River.
