Built before the 2nd World War, The Farmer’s Market in Los Angeles on Fairfax and Third is something you won’t want to miss. In July 1934, a contingent of farmers pulled their trucks onto an expanse of empty land at the property known as Gilmore Island at the corner of Third and Fairfax in Los Angeles. They displayed their produce on the tailgates of their vehicles. Also, to their delight – customers quickly arrived and parked their cars on a hastily created dirt parking lot in spaces designated with chalk. They strolled among the trucks purchasing fruit, vegetables, and flowers.
Casual Atmosphere
The atmosphere was casual, the open air commerce enticing, the goods fresh, and the result remarkable. Farmers Market became an instant institution. Of course, now there are several farmers markets spread throughout the city, but none are as special at this one. 
Food, Clothing & More
A shopping experience like none other, the Market has numerous stores from antique clothing, candle shops, toys, kids clothing, candy stores, variety stores, beers, wines, ice creams, meats, nuts, wireless market and sports shops. On the North side of the market (toward Beverly) you’ll find various stalls with fresh fruits and vegetables as well as handmade jewelry and gadgets.
Local Restaurants
Restaurants galore are here. Many are unique to Los Angeles like Du-Par’s, a landmark diner (the only other version of this is in the valley on Ventura Blvd. near Laurel Cyn in Studio City opposite CBS Radford.) You’ll find coffee shops like Bob’s Coffee and Doughnuts and Charlie’s Coffee Shop, as well as Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf and Starbucks. There are sit down places such as 326, Bryan’s Pit Barbecue, China Depot, The French Crepe Company, The Gumbo Pot, Freshii, Chipotle, Deano’s Gourmet Pizza, Little Spain, LA Korea, iLoteria, Planet Dailies and E.B’s Beer and Wine. There is also Johnny Rockets, a 50’s diner style, which has several outlets through the city.
During the year, there are several events including Mardi Gras celebrations and special Christmas and Easter parties.
