Adventure vacations can be a lot of fun, especially if you plan to do some exploring along the way. Hiking, biking, sightseeing, kayaking, and camping are all popular excursions for adventure lovers.
Naturally, adventure travel poses inherent dangers as well. To help keep you and your loved ones as safe as possible, our team has compiled 6 Safety Tips for Adventure Travel:
Do your research.
Before you embark on your adventure, be sure you know exactly where you are going and what you will need to get there. Check weather reports before your departure to determine the best start time for activities. Also, gather research online about the territory in which you plan to explore. Map your journey ahead of time to ensure you remain safe during your adventure.
Pack safety gear.
Adventure equipment varies based upon the excursion you plan to pursue. Depending on the activities you plan to pursue, you will want to pack the corresponding safety gear. If you will be on the water, bring a paddle, water beacons and inflatable life jackets. If you’re hiking, harnesses, carabineers and lightweight backpacks will be better suited for your adventure. A switchblade will also come in handy during adventure excursions.
Assemble a first-aid kit.
It is easy to create your own travel first-aid kit. Start by filling a mason jar or Ziploc bag with items such as Band-Aids, anti-bacterial wipes, and anti-infection cream. Alternatively, you can purchase a first-aid kit at your local convenience store. Keep your first-aid kit close by for easy access during emergency situations. You might also want to tuck a few extra Band-aids in the outer pocket of your backpack, which brings us to our next safety tip.
Wear proper footwear.
The importance of proper footwear cannot be overstated. Not only will the right shoes provide comfort and utility, but the right kicks can also save you from injury as well. Flip-flops, for example, should be worn on the beach and not while hiking a mountain. Likewise, hiking boots probably aren’t necessary for a day on the sailboat. In order to prevent blisters or other injuries, be sure your shoes fit properly and that your shoe choice is well suited for the activity.
Go with a guide.
Even the most skilled adventurers recognize the value of an experienced guide. Just because you won’t be exploring alone, doesn’t mean the value of your experience will be diminished. In fact, a guide will likely be able to deliver an enhanced experience by providing insight regarding the location as well as access to certain areas that may have otherwise been inaccessible. You should always confirm the credentials of your guide and the licenses of the company before you embark on your adventure.
Stay hydrated.
Increased sun exposure most certainly may increase one’s risk of dehydration. To avoid becoming dehydrated, pack bottled water in your backpack to quench your thirst throughout the day. Even if you’re not feeling thirsty or hungry, try to munch on healthy snacks to maintain your energy level.
