One of the most relaxing attractions to visit when sightseeing are botanical gardens. Not only can you experience a beautiful setting with a loved one, but you can also learn about the local and exotic flora in a region. 

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens (Boothbay, ME)


Open daily from April through October, these beautiful botanical gardens come alive with just about every variety of flower you can think of — and probably some that are new to you, as well! Seasonal exhibits and permanent sculptures round out the artsy, peaceful atmosphere. You might be surprised to learn that the gardens have only been open since 2007, after more than 15 years of hard work by area residents who helped plan and plant.

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (Miami, FL)


Thanks to its hot, humid climate, the Fairchild Garden is one of a handful in the country that can support tropical plant life year-round. In addition to the flora, you’ll also find thousands of butterflies and fish at the Wings of the Tropics Conservatory. In addition, you can scope some truly unique fruit at the Tropical Fruit Pavilion, like Durians and Mangosteens, and even more delicious herbs and plants at the Edible Garden. Both kids and adults alike will find plenty to love here.

Portland Japanese Garden (Portland, OR)


If you can’t make it to Japan, this tranquil spot is the next best thing. Spanning more than five acres, you have your choice of more than one oasis: including a tea garden, a sand and stone garden, and a strolling pond garden. Art exhibits — most of which are inspired by Japanese culture — visit the garden seasonally. Guided tours are complimentary with the price of admission here, and offered daily at noon.

The Ruth Bancroft Garden (Walnut Creek, CA)


Succulents and aloe are the primary plants at the Ruth Bancroft Garden, a three-acre expanse that is treasured in the Bay Area community and operates as a nonprofit public garden. The land used to serve as a large fruit farm, but now strictly grows flowers and plants. From Tuesday through Saturday, visitors can take a self-guided tour of the garden for $10.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden (Henrico, VA)


Just outside of Richmond, the town of Henrico is home to one of the most stunning gardens in the U.S, which features rose gardens, a butterfly exhibit, and a cherry tree walk. In June, blooming flowers include lilies, poppies, magnolia and echinacea. Exciting, innovative exhibits are introduced throughout the year, like the Nature Connects: Art with LEGO Bricks! sculpture series currently on display.
