The History
The Augusta Canal is a National Heritage Area that was established by the U.S. Congress in 1845. The National Heritage Area is an ideal destination for those who are interested in the rich history of Georgia and our nation. The Augusta Canal walks visitors through the Industrial Revolution that took place in the American South. The canal provided textile and many other manufacturing sources to the southeast around the time of the Civil War. To this day, the Canal is the oldest hydropower canal still running and operating in America.
Discovery Center & Guided Tours
Be sure to stop by the Canal Discovery Center before making your way to the Canal. The Augusta Canal Discovery Center is located at Enterprise Mill. In addition, it’s a resource to guests to learn about those who built the canal and made it what it is today. Also available to guests are guided canal boat tours that depart daily.
Outdoor Activities & More
Ready for some outdoor recreation? The Augusta Canal is also on the map for being a great location to experience outdoor recreational experiences such as towpaths, trails and a waterway. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to walk to bike through the trails for an experience you will not forget and that all ages can enjoy.
Another favorite among canal visitors is the Savannah Rapids Park. Enjoy a picnic at the Savannah Rapids Pavilion – you can enjoy the great outdoors in a relaxing way for the whole family. There are also several sites to see when you stop at the Rapid Park.
