Even though pretty much everyone in the US knows about the fun to be had on Cinco de Mayo, the actually origins of the date might not be quite as well known.
The original Cinco de Mayo occurred way back in 1852. On that day, the 5th of May, the Mexican army unexpectedly won a huge fight, called the Battle of Puebla, against the French. This victory, played an important part in the histories of both Mexico and the United States, indirectly.
Because winning this battle was such a big surprise, it shouldn’t come as a big surprise that the Mexican people decided to celebrate, hence the beginnings of Cinco de Mayo. Today, this holiday is something that is celebrated in over 120 different cities and spots in the US.
Known for it’s food, music, dance, drink, and overall festive and celebratory atmosphere, Cinco de Mayo celebrations are a highlight in early May. You don’t have to go too far to find a party near you. In fact, let’s take a look at some of the most popular spots to celebrate across America.
San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio has a beautiful downtown Riverwalk area, but it truly comes alive around Cinco de Mayo time. To get in on the action, head to Market Square where you will find dozens of authentic music, singers, and dancers, plus some amazing food to sample.
Denver, Colorado
Denver gets into the full spirit of Cinco de Mayo, hosting a two day event that features everything from live bands to chili cook offs to chihuahua races, you don’t want to miss it! To get a full experience, head over to Central Civic Park where the Celebrate Culture event takes place every May.
Portland, Oregon
Portland takes it’s “sister city” relationship with the Mexican city of Guadalajara very seriously. In fact, it’s the main push behind their annual Cinco de Mayo celebration that draws an estimated 300,000 thousand people. Enjoy carnival rides, an artisan village, live music, and plenty of food and drink.
New York City, New York
If you’re in and around New York City, you’ve got a ton of options to choose from when it comes to Cinco de Mayo. There is an official celebration of culture, music, and dance at Sunset Park in Brooklyn, but you’ll be surrounded by a number of bars and restaurants that will all be holding events as well.
Los Angeles, California
It probably doesn’t come as a big surprise that Los Angles has one of the biggest Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the country. In fact, the parade around it is so huge, there are an estimated 500,000 people that participate in it, the culmination of the Fiesta Broadway celebration that starts in late April.
