There are plenty of amazing things that California is know for, the sun, the sand, Hollywood, just to name a few. But, where people normally associate beaches with Southern California, there are actually some incredible beaches that you might not even realize in Northern California as well.
Now, before we get into the beaches, it’s important to know that when we say “Northern California” this area is approximately from the area around San Francisco and San Jose and north towards the border with Oregon.
While most people head to this area for the cities and the National Parks like Yosemite, don’t discount spending a bit of time on the beaches. Read on to see where you should go.
San Gregorio State Beach
Not far from San Gregorio, California you’ll find one of the best beaches in all of California (north or south) and what many consider to be a true hidden gem. If you want to find a truly rustic beach that most people don’t even know about, then head north of San Francisco to Point Reyes National Seashore and drive to the very tip where you’ll find McClures Beach. It’s likely you won’t run into many people besides a handful of adventurous surfers at this beach, but if you’re looking for remote, it’s worth the ride!
Baker Beach
Most people don’t consider beaches when they think about all the things to do in and around the San Francisco area. But, that doesn’t mean they aren’t there. If you want to hide away from the hustle and bustle of the city and get a little relaxation time in the sun, check out Baker Beach. It’s not a great beach for swimming, but for fishing, sunbathing, and strolling it’s a great bet.
Golds Bluff Beach is part of the Prairie Creek Redwoods Park, which is in turn a part of the California Coastal Trail. So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that this beach is truly a natural wonderland and filled with rustic beauty. Not too far from some of California’s famous Redwoods, in only a short drive you can be at the beach.
Sonoma Coast State Beach
Could there be a better trip than one that involves some time enjoying wine in Sonoma Valley and then on the beach? The good news is you can do that by heading out to Sonoma Coast State Beach. Running approximately 17 miles long, this beach is great for checking out natural wildlife like whale watching and seals as well.
These are just five of the beaches you’ll find in Northern California, and there are plenty more to enjoy, but they are some of our very favorite. No matter if you’re spending time in the big cities, enjoying learning about the vines in wine country, or just want to spend a few hours sitting on the sand, you’ll find something to enjoy at each one of these beaches.
