Still haven’t figured out just where to spend that all-important long weekend that’s coming up? Don’t fret; we’ve handpicked some top spots that are perfect for a quick getaway.
Newport, Rhode Island
Admire the majestic mansions that line the jagged Cliff Walk, browse for jewelry and gifts along Thames Street, and snap some shots of the Castle Hill or Rose Island lighthouse. It’s hard not to appreciate Newport’s natural beauty and nautical vibe.
Santa Barbara, California
Picturesque and SoCal-chic, Santa Barbara is a fabulous spot to eat, drink, and be merry in a beautiful and relaxed locale. After taking in some stories from the past at the Old Mission Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, you can stroll down State Street to grab a bite, catch a movie, or indulge in some retail therapy.
Hilton Head, South Carolina
Pack in one more trip to the beach before fall sets in! The pristine white sands of Hilton Head make it easy to relax without any hustle-bustle or distractions, but the charming city of Savannah, Georgia is only about 45 minutes away by car once you’ve gotten your share of sun. There’s plenty to do right on the island, too: after a day of biking, waterskiing, and fishing, get dressed up for dinner at The Jazz Corner or Live Oak.
Portland, Maine
Labor Day is the perfect time to pay a visit to vibrant city in southern Maine, as you’ll still enjoy milder summer temperatures. Don’t be afraid to venture beyond the Old Port district, which is popular with tourists. After you get your fill at the Portland Lobster Company and pick up a souvenir at one of the many gift shops, wander over to the West End to check out an art gallery, vintage boutique, or record store. Feeling outdoorsy? Hop on the ferry to Peaks Island and hike or bike to your heart’s content.
Fort Lauderdale, Florida
While it gained a bit of a reputation as a spring break destination in the past, there’s another side to Fort Lauderdale that might just surprise you. Soak up some rays on the beach before getting dinner and drinks in the adjacent neighborhood of Las Olas and catching a show at the Broward Performing Arts Center. The city’s location on the Intracoastal Waterway also means that there are plenty of options for boat, water taxi, and gondola rides.
