If you are looking for an interesting diversion while on a road trip in California, I would suggest going to Paso Robles, California. It is located halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles and can break up your long drive. For a real thrill, take a road trip while on a road trip and visit Steinbeck Vineyards in Paso Robles. They are best known for their “Crash” wine, which was launched after a military plane crashed on the family’s property in 1956. Four out of the five men on board parachuted to safety and the family helped keep them alive until medical help arrived. Pieces of the actual B26 military plane, plus details of the thrilling story, are on display in their tasting room. I joined Cindy Steinbeck Newkirk, a fifth-generation Paso Robles native for a “Crash Course” tour of the entire property, learned about the history of wine in the region, followed by wine tasting in their tasting room. During the “Crash Course,” I hopped aboard a vintage jeep, up and down the hills, and took a fascinating journey through the vineyards, then topped it off with an amazing California sunset! It was truly a magical and exhilarating experience, sipping wine, hearing exciting tales, and enjoying the breath-taking scenery, with the cool California breeze blowing through our hair! This is what California dreamin’ is all about and is a true California experience.
