Sixth Street
For a true taste of Austin’s nightlife, look no further than Sixth Street, the downtown hub for live music, dining, and entertainment. You’ll find a wide range of venues that cater to just about everyone, from country bars to rock ‘n roll drives to hip-hop clubs. Grab drinks at The Tiniest Bar in Texas, or if you’re looking for some more room, Bat Bar, or LUX Lounge has you covered. In terms of restaurants, Eureka!, The Grove Wine Bar & Kitchen, or Parkside are popular picks.
Barton Springs Pool
This old-fashioned swimming hole is a favorite among both locals and tourists, and it’s the perfect place to cool off on those hot Texas afternoons in the spring and summer — though the water itself stays around a balmy 70 degrees most days. While it can get crowded, the pool is three acres, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding some space to spread out.
Texas State Capitol
In the heart of Downtown Austin, the Capitol Building not only makes for a great photo op but is equally as interesting on its interior. Tours that explore the inner workings of the state’s legal system are offered seven days a week, with no reservations necessary unless your group is larger than ten people.
Lady Bird Lake
Opportunities for adventure abound at Lady Bird Lake: you can rent a kayak, canoe, or even try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding. Better known as “Town Lake” to Austin residents, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a long run as well.
Lyndon B. Johnson Library and Museum
It might sound like a snooze fest, but you won’t want to miss this one. Housed within this library are incredible interactive exhibits, including one dedicated to the Vietnam War, and another focuses on the legislation that Johnson passed during his tenure as president. You’ll even get the chance to listen to private phone conversations between the president and VIPs as he helped shape the future of our country. Who knew history could be so cool?
