Reno, Nevada, is known for its proximity to the Sierra Nevadas and glorious Lake Tahoe. Reno’s National Automobile Museum
This automobile museum showcases more than 200 vintage cars. If you want to see some amazing wheels, this is the place. They are bright and shiny and well cared for, and they bring back feelings of nostalgia in some, and awe and wonder in others. Everyone has their favorite. We particularly like the gold Rolls Royce runabout with the clear bonnet so you can see the engine. Now, where to park it…! Gullwing Mercedes? Early VW? Period clothing and jewelry displays? They’ve got them all. The beaded handbag display is especially jazzy.
Reno’s MidTown District
Reno’s MidTown District is lined with shops and restaurants that are cutting edge, artsy, vibrant, and fun. You can get lost in some of the boutiques, and enjoy both a daytime or nightlife visit. Animal Ark

North of downtown, go see the Animal Ark. It is a sanctuary for rescued lions, tigers, and bears, and other wildlife, oh my! It is a non-profit wildlife sanctuary and education center, dedicated to inspiring environmental stewardship through wildlife education. Since 1981, this 38-acre sanctuary with naturally landscaped enclosures has served as a safe haven for owls, birds of prey, big cats of many kinds, as well as wolves, coyotes, and more. Keep in mind that the Animal Ark closes in the winter; check for opening times.
Reno’s Truckee River Walk
The River Walk is a two-mile loop trail along the river, which is great for a stroll, a jog, a bike ride, or simply to sit and take in the view. Nicely landscaped with small pavilions, bridges, fountains, benches, and river overlooks, the River Walk is accessible year-round. Want to get out on the river? Consider a visit to the Whitewater Park at Wingfield Park, in warm weather.
Reno’s Nevada Museum of Art
Reno’s Nevada Museum of Art is the only accredited museum in the state of Nevada, and from the stunning modern architecture to the charming sculpture garden, you will be glad that you visited. The museum is dedicated to Nevada art. The basket weaving from local tribes is a favorite exhibit. There’s a good selection of contemporary art. The shop is filled with great “only here” items for you to take home to remember your visit. And for a memorable meal, there is a super restaurant in the lobby that rivals great museum restaurants around in the world.
Grab a Bite to Eat
A trip to Reno is incomplete without a visit to Louis’ Basque Corner, for the mussels over rice, or to the Nugget for their “Awful Awful”. This full half-pound hamburger is a local legend. It is cooked on a hot topped griddle, with a special secret sauce seasoned with a kick of Tabasco, piled on a fresh onion roll and served with a heap of fries. Try their pie too!
