Louisiana is home to both delicious cuisine and some of that good old Southern charm. But while most people visiting Louisiana head to New Orleans, there’s another gem on the other side of the state, the city of Shreveport.
Situated right on the Red River, much like it’s more famous sister city, Shreveport is also known as a place with plenty to do, eat, and see. Plus it’s known for a fun and friendly wild side making it a perfect destination for a weekend getaway with friends.
In this post, we’re going to give you everything you need to know about Shreveport.
Things to Do
When it comes to things to see and do, you’re not going to run out of options. So we thought we’d narrow it down for you and give you some of our favorites!
Dining
You cannot go to Louisiana and not fall in love with the food. And Shreveport is no different.
Herby K’s is the cities oldest restaurant. Opened in 1936 it’s still a favorite among locals. Try the famous Shrimp Buster po boy while you’re there.
Crawdaddy’s Kitchen is another famous local spot, serving the best, you guessed it, crawfish in the region. And for some cajun food with a casual bar atmosphere check out the Blind Tiger.
Local breweries are becoming hot in Shreveport. Two of the local favorites are the Red River Brewing Co. and Great Raft Brewing. Both host events and tastings throughout the year.
Places to See
You can find plenty of cultural attractions both standard and off the beaten path.
Did you know the largest rose garden in America is located in Shreveport? The American Rose Center is over 100 acres dedicated to this beautiful flower. You can stroll through the botanical center and see hundreds of varieties.
Shreveport is right on the Red River. In the past few years, the Red River District area has been developed and is now filled with attractions from shopping at the Louisiana Boardwalk to bars and other live entertainment.
Not far from the Red River District you’ll find the Shreveport Water Works Museum. This National Historic Landmark is 130 years old and offers a fascinating look at how water gets to your faucet.
Go inside the unsuspecting red brick building that houses the RW Norton Art Gallery, and you’ll be surprised by the incredible works of art. From Greek sculptures to Dutch masters, you’ll find plenty to admire here.
Getting There
Shreveport is in the Northwest corner of Louisana. It sits at the intersection of two major interstate highways, I-20 and I-49.
With such easy access to highways means it’s a perfect stop for any Southern road trip. In just about three hours you can get there from Dallas, Texas; Jackson, Mississippi; and Little Rock, Arkansas.
As you can see, enough is going on in Shreveport to keep you entertained and ready to come back for more that’s what makes it a great Southern city.
Road trip, anyone?
