Only 45 minutes away from heavily tourist populated Seattle – Tacoma, Washington often gets overlooked. But, why? It’s every bit as happening, and attractive. (And it’s less expensive too!)
In this post, you will find a quick run through of the different things there are to see and love, in Tacoma.
Tacoma is good for a lot of things, but two in particular: Nature and Art. If you are an outdoor adventurist, an art enthusiast of any kind- or even better, both- you’re absolutely in the right place. Check out these things to do.
NATURE
- Stop and smell the wildflowers in Mount Rainier National Park.
- Go fishing, and whale watching at Puget Sound.
- Visit over 300 different species of animals, including polar bears, tigers, meerkats and more at the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.
- Drive (or walk) the 5 Mile Drive at Point Defiance Park. Locals and visitors alike agree that is like a hidden forest within the city, and an excellent place to visit regardless of the season. It is an excellent place to see for a couple of hours or even a full day. You can drive the road path or find the private trails for walking, hiking, and biking. Enjoy the beautiful moss covered trees and scenic gardens that cover every bit of the park. Admire the flowers in bloom, snap pictures, stop and set up a picnic with the family, or put your feet in the sand at Owen’s beach, also located within the park.
ART
- Museum of Glass – Museum of Glass was created by Tacoma resident and influential glass artist, Dale Chihuly. Today, visitors can tour the facility and watch the artists hard at work in the Hot Shop. If you’re in Downtown Tacoma, you can take the 500-foot Chihuly Bridge of Glass to straight to the museum.
MORE
Speaking of bridges and museums. Visit the Washington State History Museum and ask about the original Tacoma Narrows Bridge, “Galloping Gertie” that collapsed in November 1940. You can visit the remodeled version today, nicknamed “Sturdy Gerdie.”
EAT
Seattleite’s aren’t the only ones who know how to make Coffee. Be the judge, and order a cup of joe from Valhalla Coffee, Bluebeard Coffee Roasters or Ma Boulangerie.
For breakfast, try the shrimp and cheese grits at Over The Moon Cafe or the Belgian waffles at La Waffletz & Macaron Station. And Devour a Jumbo Cheeseburger with a side of jalapeno hush puppies during lunchtime at Southern Kitchen. Make reservations for a nice dinner and glass of wine at the Lobster Shop.
If it’s a sweet tooth you’ve got, melt your heart out at Ice Cream Social.
NIGHTLIFE
Keys on Main – There is a reason why it is so popular in Tacoma. This piano bar has it all: happening atmosphere, alcoholic drinks, talented pianists, live music, and hearty laughs with friends.
Tacoma Cabana– For something of an islandy feel and a quick escape to “Hawaii” for the night, head to this tiki bar, and order yourself a mai-tai. You also need to order yourself the guacamole and chips!
