The Overseas Highway
There is plenty to see and do on this 113-mile highway that takes you all the way from Miami to Key West. Constructed in 1928 and open to visitors in 1938, the majority of the road is built on top of the old Overseas Railroad. Sure, you could drive straight to Key West and dive into visitor favorites like Mallory Square and the Ernest Hemingway House. But, then you’d miss out on half of the fun. There are many enjoyable stops along the way including the History of Diving Museum, The Dolphin Research Center, and Bahia Honda State Park, to name a few.
Martin Highway
Known to locals as simply “The Grade”, this scenic byway is new to the club. While it’s only been around for 5 years, you will find that the feel of the area is much, much older. In a nostalgic, and familiar kind of way. When you’re traveling down the straight, oak tree canopy covered road, it’s almost like you’re taking a drive backward in time to a simpler and beautifully untouched version of Florida.
The Big Bend Byway
If you’re in search of another stretch of untouched Florida land, consider the Big Bend Highway located along the Gulf Coast. It doesn’t matter where you start because there is immense beauty and outdoor adventure waiting for you in every direction. If you love being in nature, there are many local and state parks to discover along the way including, Wakulla Springs State Park, Bald Point State Park, Ochlockonee River State Park, St. George Island State Park, and more.
Ocean Drive
Home to many popular restaurants, shops, nightclubs, and the famous Art Deco architecture, Ocean Drive is likely Miami’s most well-known street. It is considered the Art Deco capital of the world because it is lined with more 1920s and 1930s style buildings than any other place. Stroll around, take in the scenery, enjoy the lively vibe, and don’t forget to find yourself a cafe con leche and Cuban sandwich along the way.
