With long travel days and back-to-back meetings, business trips can be exhausting. While it might be tempting to kick back and relax, business travelers might miss a valuable opportunity to explore a new city and all it has to offer!
So, it’s time to swap your heels for sneakers and put away your briefcase. We’ve compiled our ideas for sightseeing on your next business trip:
Events & Festivals
If you’re fortunate enough to be traveling on non-business days, then take advantage of the weekend activities! Many event calendars can be found online, so a bit of research will be helpful as you determine which events or festivals to explore. (DTN Tip: If your event requires tickets or advanced registration, then utilize your hotel’s concierge for advanced printing.)
Wine & Dine
Whether you prefer casual dining or fine cuisine, your host city will likely have many options to satisfy your taste buds. Plus, on the weekend, you’re more likely to see the locals out and about and really get a flavor of the city. If nothing else, your hotel will be able to recommend something for you. (DTN Tip: Utilize resources like Yelp to read reviews from others before you dine.)
Nightlife
Many cities come alive at night, so grab a cab and start exploring! Not only will you avoid the hassle of trying to find parking on a weekend, but you will also eliminate the risk of drinking and driving. Treat yourself to a nice meal after a long day, or grab a drink from a local pub. If you’re fortunate enough to have a guide, then pick his or her brains for the “local” places to go. Local Attractions
Whether it’s the Space Needle in Seattle or the Empire State Building in New York City, give yourself permission to become a cheesy tourist. These entertaining visits will also provide excellent photo ops and views of the city. Other educational attractions, like art museums or zoos, can be especially fun to explore on the weekend. State & National Parks
If you’re the adventurous type, pack a pair of hiking boots and explore a local, state or national park during your downtime. If you’re crunched for time, but still want to explore, then why not navigate one of the nation’s scenic loops? One of the real joys of National Parks is that many can be seen up close and personal by car. (DTN Tip: Pack a lunch ahead of time to enjoy a picnic in the park!)
