For most people, going to see a drive-in movie probably feels like a relic from the past.
People pull up in their old cars, grab some popcorn from the concession stand, and watch some old movie in black and white. In movies set in the 1950s and 60s, this was a way of life.
Today, it’s not quite portrayed the same.
However, the reality is a little bit different. In fact, there are over 300 of these movie theaters still running across the US. In this post, we’re going to share some of the best drive-in movie theaters in the US.

Bangor Drive-In (Hermon, ME)
During the summer, the Maine coast is one of the best, and most beautiful, places in the country to frolic or sail in the surf. But, once the sun goes down, you can head away from the coast and toward Bangor where you’ll find the Bangor Drive-In. It’s open Fridays and Saturday’s all summer and has two screens, perfect for double features.
Skyline Drive-In (Barstow, CA)
If you’re already on a road trip checking out Route 66 in California, then you’ll want to head to Skyline Drive-In. It’s only a mile off the famous highway in Barstow. What’s cool about this drive-in is it has a really old school feel, including providing each car with a speaker to hang on your window.
Coyote Drive-In (Fort Worth, TX)
At Fort Worth’s Coyote Drive-In, you can watch any movie for free — if you arrive on your horse. If you do decide to check out a movie by car, that’s fine too, and with this drive-in, you can bring your pets. It has multiple screens that usually features paired up double features. Plus there is a canteen for snacks too.
Sunset Drive-In (Colchester, VT)
If you want a full slate of fun and activities, check out Vermont’s Sunset Drive-In. Here, you’ll find more than just movies on four screens. There’s also a snack bar, a mini-golf course, and a go-kart track. This drive-in is a really popular spot for local and visiting families.
Field of Dreams Drive-In (Liberty Center, OH)
This small owner-operated company has two locations in Ohio. What sets the Field of Dreams Drive-Ins apart from some of the competition is they allow you to reserve not only tickets but also parking spots online. So you can make sure you have a front-row view of your favorite movie.
Blue Star Drive-In (Minturn, CO)
How about watching a movie at the “highest drive-in in the country?” At Colorado’s Blue Star Drive-In you can do that. Due to weather, it has a short season, but if you’re near Vail, Colorado in July and August, be sure to make time to catch a movie. This drive-in pretty much exclusively features classics and sing-alongs.
Alamo Draft House (Austin, TX)
This isn’t your traditional drive-in, but it’s pretty cool too. Every summer, the Alamo Draft House hosts a roving tour of ‘on the water’ screenings throughout Texas. With these movies, you can watch your favorite films while floating in an inner-tube. Pretty cool, right?
