My husband grew up in Rhode Island, and since I’m not from the area when we moved back, I became what is referred to as a “Bride of Rhode Island.” Now that we’ve lived here for a while and have children I understand the reason so many Rhode Islanders who have moved away move back to raise their families. Rhode Island provides an incredible quality of life for raising children, from its many beautiful beaches to its fantastic resources for kids; there is always plenty to keep them entertained. Therefore, I thought I’d share some of my favorites with you.

Things to Do With Kids in Rhode Island

Green Animal Topiary Gardens Children’s Party

This annual event has the feel of an English garden party, where the topiary bushes in the gardens are trimmed into large animal shapes. Lemonade and cookies welcome the kids, in addition, wine is available for the adults. Most noteworthy, the rolling green lawn leads to a spectacular water view. Bring a blanket and purchase from their BBQ for dinner. Pony rides, a bouncy house, and amazing performances by various artists. In the past artists such as the Big Apple Circus and the Toe Jam Puppet band have kept the kids enthralled. July 13th 4-8pm. Get there early for good parking. 380 Cory’s Lane Portsmouth, RI 02871-1324 – (401) 683-1267

Roger Williams Zoo

We are so lucky to have such a fantastic and extensive zoo in Rhode Island. Along with the many great animal exhibits, there are always fresh activity programs available for the kids. Both single and double strollers help tired little legs make it the whole way through, and are available to rent at the entrance.

Save it for another outing or make a day of Roger Williams Park by heading over to the Roger Williams Park Carousel Village. Here you can play on the fun Hasbro playground and the carousel is only $1.00 for a ride.

Providence Children’s Museum

A wonderful hands on children’s museum where there is always so much to do inside, but kids love their fantastic outdoor climbing structure too. My kids could spend the whole time in just the water room! If you go to the Children’s Museum, I recommend going right around the corner to have a yummy lunch at Olga’s Cup & Saucer. It is one of my families all time favorite places to eat in Rhode Island.

Activities and Museums

If it’s not nice outside, try one of the great indoor roller skating rinks; United Skates of America in Rumford also has laser tag and rock climbing. Also, we love Narragansett Ocean Club Roller Skating Rink for its old-fashioned feel as well. If you love rock climbing or have wanted to try It out, Rock Spot Climbing is a great place to go in Lincoln, RI. If you have never taken your kids to find the real Egyptian Mummy or the giant Buddha at the RISD Art Museum, it is worth the trip.

The Mystic Aquarium is well worth the 40-minute drive to nearby Connecticut. Exhibits include Beluga whales, and a Sting Ray touch tank, Sea Lion, shows, Titanic Exhibits and a 4-D theater. Don’t forget the fish! This makes a really fun day trip.

The Mystic Seaport is another fantastic day trip; this living museum is in the gorgeous setting of the Mystic River. It is a replica Seaport village including boats to explore, live demonstrations, a planetarium, a mini children’s museum, a playground and many daily educational programs. You can eat there or go to the famous Mystic Pizza. Yes, THE Mystic Pizza is nearby in quaint downtown Mystic and lives up to its reputation for amazing pizza.

Lastly, if all that activity has you tired out, head to one of our gorgeous beaches to relax! It isn’t hard to find something fun to do with your kids in Rhode Island.
