Spanning 12 states, from Utah to New Jersey, a drive on Highway 40 can be considered one of the ultimate (almost) cross-country road trips. Here are just a handful of the hot spots that you’ll pass on this journey across much of the U.S.
Colorado
Make a day of it in Downtown Denver! You can get your fill of arts, culture, shopping, and dining along the 16th Street Mall, an bustling stretch of fun boutiques, eateries, and bars. For some true historic charm, wander over to Larimer Square, the oldest area of the city.
Indiana
Don’t sleep on this Midwest state during your adventure; there’s plenty to see and do. Get in touch with nature at White River State Park, or take a walk on the wild side at the Indianapolis Zoo. You can also learn about the history of the state, which is named “The Crossroads of America,” at the Indiana State Museum. You’ll also pass through the town of Plainfield, which is home to the open-air Metropolis Mall and the totally retro Oasis Diner.
Ohio
The Buckeye State capital of Columbus is another fun stop. Admire the exhibits at the Columbus Museum of Art, or get a glimpse into the workings of the government with free guided tour of the Ohio Statehouse, offered seven days a week.
Pennsylvania
As you pass through PA, make a pitstop at the Fort Necessity National Battlefield, which marked the beginning of the French and Indian War in 1754. Today, you can take a peek into the past with summertime tours and lectures, as well as the Mount Washington Tavern museum.
Maryland
While Baltimore’s historic Washington Monument is currently closed for renovations, you can still get a taste of the city with a visit to the postcard-perfect Inner Harbor, where you’ll find the National Aquarium, along with shops, restaurants, and colorful dragon boats just begging to be taken for a spin on the water.
New Jersey
Big money, big money! Try your luck at the end (or beginning) of the trip in the glitzy town of Atlantic City. However, gambling isn’t the only activity you can enjoy in this seaside town. Stroll the famous boardwalk, which promises plenty of people-watching, beach snacks, and silly souvenirs. You can also see some mind-bending phenomena at the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Museum, or act like a kid again at the Steel Pier Amusement Park.
