Along the 100 miles of Georgia’s shoreline, you’ll find four barrier islands. These are known as the “Golden Isles of Georgia.”

The largest of the Golden Isles is St. Simons Island.
Even though St. Simons only has just over 10,000 permanent residents, it attracts thousands of visitors each year to experience its beaches, food, and traditional Southern culture.

Even though St. Simons is a relatively small island, it’s packed with things to do. So if you’re looking to do more than spend time on the beach, you’re in luck!
Beach Activities
St. Simons Island has been on the list of the top beach towns in America for a few years now. If you’re all about setting out a towel, opening a book, and ignoring the rest of the world, East Beach is the spot for you.
But if you want to get a bit more active, there are plenty of options. Aspiring fishermen and women can charter a boat for a day, half a day, or for something a bit simpler, head to the Fishing Pier and drop in a line.
Historical Sites
This area is home to a number of historical sites too, ranging from the 1700s and on. First, check out the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum. Learn it’s rich history and tour climb to the top for an amazing view.
Then check out Fort Frederica National Monument. Here, you’ll learn about the battles between the British and the Spanish over this land and get to check out some archeological grounds too.
Christ Church Frederica is another popular historical site. This parish dates back to almost the founding of St. Simons and has one of the oldest cemeteries in Georgia with graves from the 1700s.
Food
For a small place, St. Simons Island is teaming with dining options. The last count, there were over 50 cafes and restaurants to choose from.
Seafood is a popular choice for locals and visitors alike so Crab Daddy’s Grill, and The Half Shell are both great options for fresh coastal cuisine.
And if you have to enjoy a bit of traditional Southern-style cooking, you don’t want to miss Barbara Jean’s or Southern Soul BBQ.
Getting There
The closest major highway to St. Simons in Interstate 95, which makes getting there pretty convenient. It’s just about smack in the middle between Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida approximately 90 minutes (or less) from each.
From Atlanta, head towards Savannah, and then turn south on I-95 to Route 17 which will lead you to the island.
